Geographical Distribution of Breckon in Britain
In 2006, a team led by Professors Paul Longley and Richard Webber from University College London launched an online tool for tracing the origin of British surnames. The 'Surname Profiler' collated the 25,000 most common family names from the 1881 United Kingdom census and the 1998 United Kingdon electoral register. The graphical representations of these data, shown below, are quite stricking.
1881 Census
In 1881 the Breckon surname prevalence was 278; found mostly in Yorkshire with some in the neighbouring districts of Tyne and Wear, and Durham. This is good evidence to suppose that the British surname Breckon has an origin in Yorkshire.
1998 Electoral Register
By the late 20th century, there had been considerable drift of the Breckon surname but still a significant proportion was in the north of England in Tyne and Wear, Durham and Cumbria. The highest prevalence was in Cleveland (north Yorkshire) with the highest postal town frequency at Whitby.
